Dr. Christian Vogler, director of the Technology Access Program in the School of Science, Technology, Accessibility, Mathematics, and Public Health, was on a panel discussing 鈥嬧�嬧�淣on-Traditional Ways the IC Leverages Diverse Talent Pools鈥� during The New IC: Empowering Women and Engaging Men virtual symposium July 6-10. This symposium was hosted by the Intelligence and National Security Alliance (INSA). Dr. Vogler鈥檚 presentation was cited by the symposium organizer as offering 鈥渁n invaluable and eye-opening perspective to our audience.鈥�

Dr. Brian Greenwald, 鈥�96, professor of history and director of the Drs. John S. & Betty J. Schuchman Deaf Documentary Center; Meredith Peruzzi, 鈥�11, director of the National Deaf Life Museum; and Brianna DiGiovanni, 鈥�20, a graduate research assistant at the Schuchman Center, presented during the 11th Deaf History International conference August 7-13 in Ljubljana, Slovenia and Zagreb, Croatia. This year鈥檚 conference theme was 鈥淒eaf people in the shadow of the breaks and ruptures of the 20th Century: 1917-2000.鈥� Dr. Greenwald and Ms. Di Giovanni presented on 鈥淯rban Deaf Spaces: Documenting Deaf Spaces in New York City, 1880-2000.鈥� Ms. Peruzzi presented on 鈥淒eaf Methods of Museum Operation鈥� with Vincent Ameloot of Belgium and Caroline Pelletier of France. Alumnae Dr. Breda Carty, G-鈥�83, and Corinna Hill, 鈥�14, presented poster sessions. This year鈥檚 presenters came from 21 countries.

Dr. Greenwald continues as DHI president through the next conference, which will be held in Montpellier, France in 2024. The 2027 conference will be in Chiba, Japan.

Four students attended the first Deaf New American National Conference July 28-30 in Syracuse, New York. They met and networked with service providers and Deaf New American leaders working to reform policy, education, and resources for Deaf refugees when they resettle in the United States. 

Attending from Gallaudet were Payton DeGraw, an undergraduate student; Emma DeCaro and Elias Henriksen, both graduate students; and Hawal Abdullah, a former refugee who is enrolled in the English Language Institute. 

鈥淭he conference was incredibly eye-opening,鈥� said Payton DeGraw. “The needs and opportunities are vast to improve the Deaf refugee resettlement experience in America. It is my hope that other U.S. deaf community members will become involved in supporting and welcoming Deaf New Americans as they resettle.”
