[SHARON NARRATING] When our academic advisor asked us

Home.
It can mean many things to different people.
Home can means many things for us.
It is hard when you feel home in an unfamiliar space.
And, then
I saw a sign.
If only my heart would believe this,
to just find the courage and take the leap.
Our fears can make us run in opposite directions.
And, oftentimes to nowhere.
It is up to me to decide how I want to do this.
Then this happened.

I’ve made friends I know will be lifelong friends.
I’ve found my home at Gallaudet.
This place is teaching me to embark on my own journey.
Looking back, I do know one thing’s for sure.
I don’t know what the next few years will look like.

Celebrating Class of 2022
[Scenes from Undergraduate | 152nd Commencement Ceremony]
The questions you’re
grappling with today are not so different than the questions
that motivate much of the world, especially at this moment in our history.
For many, the pandemic upended not just the way we live our lives,
but the way we think about the lives we’re living.
People are increasingly asking
big questions of themselves
What do I really want to do with my life?
Who do I really want to be?
At the heart of it, I think, is
one of humanity’s most essential questions.
What does it take to build a life that provides
meaning and fulfillment?
And the thing about it
is that no one can answer that question for you.
And that includes me.
There’s no iPhone feature that can come to the rescue
AI is good, but it’s not that good.
Still,
I have one important piece of advice I want to share.
So important that it’s
the only piece of advice I’m going to share today.
And that is this
Whatever you do, lead with your values.
By leading with your values,
what I mean is that you should make decisions big and small
each and every day based on a deep understanding of who you are
and what you believe.

I’m from Texas – a small town that no one has heard of, and I grew up with a hearing family.Â
Now, I’m here at 91¸£Àûµ¼º½. I’ve met people from all over the world, Â
all from different backgrounds.Â
Now, all of us are together in one community of learning!Â
Sometimes you may think you know everything, but no! 91¸£Àûµ¼º½ has more to teach you.Â
The world out there is big, but 91¸£Àûµ¼º½ is bigger!Â
Opportunities aren’t limited to just the classroom – there’s so much more outside of the classroom.Â
I know I can’t get this experience anywhere else. Only at 91¸£Àûµ¼º½.Â
Why did I come here? For a real college experience that will prepare me for life beyond college.Â
For example, I can lead in student organizations…Â
become a captain and play NCAA level sports…Â
join the debate team and college bowl team.Â
Also, there’s a big audience of students, faculty, and staff…Â
Where you can pitch your business idea at Bison TankÂ
Work with over 100 departments with deaf leaders and become one…Â
Is that all we have? No! We have a lot of students from all over, Â
where you can make friends and connect – even at 2 in the morning!Â
Here at 91¸£Àûµ¼º½, we belong. Â
Connecting with empathy means that we can influence…Â
Fully understand and learn from each other to grow.Â
Through this, we learn to problem solve, Â
but that only comes with the full academic experience at 91¸£Àûµ¼º½.Â
No matter where you are now, no matter your identity – signing, Â
mainstreamed, deaf school – you will learn your way. I know I have!
Hey! My name is Warren Snipe.
Everyone calls me WAWA.
I remember when I first came to 91¸£Àûµ¼º½,
I didn’t know sign language.
At that time, there was a program called NSP: New Signers Program.
Now it’s called JumpStart.
Looking back, the impact was incredible.
I learned so much about Deaf culture, about myself.
I really grew in my mind and heart. Yeah!
I learned so much about myself as a Deaf person.
With signed communication, I never felt left out.
I felt included.
Without that program, I would not be the person I am today.
Thanks!
YOU should join! Go for it!
