Old, old, old-timers at Gallaudet (like this author) may remember Dr. Joseph Grigely, who taught in the Department of English from 1983 to 1996. Grigely, who is also an accomplished artist, a former professional ice hockey player, and an expert fly fisher, left to accept an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University. He taught at the University of Michigan before assuming his current role as a professor of visual and critical studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Grigely has a new exhibit, , at MASS MoCa in North Adams, Massachusetts, and was recently profiled by Max Norman in . According to Norman, Hans Ulrich Obrist, the artistic director of the Serpentine Gallery in London, says of Grigely, 鈥淗e鈥檚 built up these extraordinary bodies of work, without compromising, really. I actually think he is one of the great artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. I don鈥檛 think he fits any label.鈥
