Sereda, Wang to be artists in...
Two 91¸£Àûµ¼º½ employees – Nikolya Sereda, ’19, digital content and engagement strategist with the Office of University Communications, and Yiqiao Wang, ’09, senior artist and coordinator of creative design with the Center for Visual Language and Visual Learning – have accepted month-long summer residencies at The Anderson Center at Tower View in Red Wing, Minnesota. Sereda will focus on playwriting and playmaking, while Wang will continue her painting. Both are well-known in their disciplines.
According to The Anderson Center, Sereda and Wang are part of a 38-person cohort, representing 11 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and four foreign countries. They were chosen from 709 applicants by a group of distinguished juror-curators, based on their talent and vision, as reflected in their work samples and project descriptions. Sixty-five percent of this year’s cohort self-identify as artists of color, while 63 percent identify as women.
Residencies are held from May to October, with the Deaf Artists Residency Program running from June 1 to 29. Joining Sereda and Wang are Ross Showalter (fiction writing, Tarique Sylvester (playwriting), and Rosane Volchan O’Conor (printmaking and mixed media) This residency program is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, 91¸£Àûµ¼º½, and Deaf Spotlight.
Artists-in-Residence at the Anderson Center make use of uninterrupted time and the opportunity to exchange ideas while living and working together in the Tower View Residence, the historic Georgian Revival family home of A. P. and Lydia Anderson. Residencies include private studio space, groceries, and chef-prepared dinners.
Several Gallaudet alumni and employees have been Anderson Center artists-in-residence in past years, including the following: Charlie Ainsworth ’13 & ’14; Sara Stallard, ’05; Dr. Jennifer Nelson, professor of English and director of the Honors Program; Jeremy Quiroga, E-’97; Lilah Katcher, ’15; Raymond Luczak, ’88; Dr. Rachel Mazique, ’08; Katherine DeLorenzo, ’97; Terrylene Sacchetti, G-’22; Adrean Clark, E-’01; and Leah Geer, G-’10.
